Excellent topic of photo interest but short on details. I found that several parts of the book strayed from the book’s title. Did not believe that the book was as good of a source of information as it could have been.

I found this through a review on RonMart’s photography blog. There are a few key techniques in this book that are critical for on-camera flash use:

    * How to adjust exposure settings on camera to acheive proper exposure in challenging situations

    * How to use swivel-head flash units to acheive the best lighting

    * How to use simple (and cheap!) flash modifiers to get the results you want

    * How to make your flash blend into the ambient light to avoid the “people pasted onto the background” look

Before reading this book, I had all but given up on using my Nikon SB600 on-camera – the results I was seeing were flat and washed out, even when I tried to bounce. With the techniques in this book, though, I can take much better photos with softer directional light without getting the flash directly into my daughter’s eyes. I’m happier with my photos and my daughter’s much more willing to have her photo taken.

Equipment I use: Nikon D80 with SB-600 swivel-head flash unit.

Note that this won’t be useful for you if you just have a point-and-shoot or are using the builtin flash on a DSLR.

I have been a long time reader of Neil’s blog, and wanted to purchase the book to both further my photographic education, and support someone who has taught me so much already. The blog is excellent, incase you have never seen it, and the book is definitely up to that standard.

It is extremely well presented and the layout is beautiful and just ‘makes sense’. You will find a wealth of information in there – from bouncing your flash on camera, to off camera flash and lighting techniques.

One thing I did notice is, you don’t feel rushed when you flip the pages. You really get the chance to examine his images and work, learn some new techniques, and adapt that work to your own style. I would highly recommend this to anyone who doesn’t know what bouncing their flash is or does – up to someone who is a seasoned pro and wants to look at some beautiful pictures.

    Thanks Neil!

As someone who knew very little about flash photography this book (On-Camera Flash Techiques for Digital Wedding and Portrait Photography) has been a tremendous help. It is not overwhelming filled with jargon and there are heaps of examples to prove points in the text. I have found it to be extremely helpful for a not-quite-novice photographer.

Although the use of a flash is a virtual necessity at most weddings, often the photographer does not have the requisite knowledge or experience to get the most out of their equipment. This book provides a good foundation in the use of on-camera flash and describes, in detail, advanced techniques that can significantly improve the quality of the final products. I have been shooting professionally for five years, but have never attempted to photograph a wedding (until my daughter asked me to photograph hers). I found this book to be very useful in providing me with basic information relating to evaluating the existing light, choosing the proper equipment, achieving proper exposure, mastering the technical aspects of flash photography, and applying the best techniques to achieve quality results. I gave the book four stars because there is a bit of repetition and the list price is somewhat high for a work that is essentially an overview of the subject. However, if the final images turn out the way I hope and the techniques prove themselves to be sound, I reserve the right to add another star to the rating.
